Head Start provides services and support for children from marginal and low-income families.
Description
The Head Start Program began in 1964, and has since developed a tradition of providing comprehensive and high quality services to foster healthy development in low-income children. The purpose of Head Start is to provide children with the necessary skills to be successful in their educational pursuit. This is a child-focused program to promote education, health, nutrition, dental and social services. The program offers services to children with special needs. Parent participation is encouraged not only as volunteers, but also as a vital part of the program. The focus is not only on the children in our program, but their families as well. An essential part of Head Start is the Family Services area. The Family Service Workers and the Head Start Director encourage the involvement of parents’ education, program planning and fund raising activities.
Family Services are in place to provide parents with the support they need and referrals. The Family Service Workers, along with the Director, provide assistance to families in many different ways.
These areas include the following:
- Community outreach
- Family needs assessments
- Emergency assistance and/or intervention
- Referrals: housing, employment, ESL
- Workshops (i.e. parenting skills, development)
Requirement for Eligibility
The requirements for eligibility are as follow:
- Children must be 3 to 5 years old
- Must meet federal income guidelines
- Must reside in the Five Towns or surrounding areas
Schedule of Service:
Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Employment verification is needed for working parents.
